What does Easter mean?

Easter is a spring festival of new life. Easter celebrates life and rebirth, that is why we see many symbols of new life and fertility at Easter, such as eggs, chicks and rabbits.

As a pagan tradition it is the beginning of growth and new life after winter. The name comes from the Anglo-Saxon goddess of the dawn and spring - Eostre.

For Christians, Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ and practising Christians attend special church services at Easter time.

Easter traditions in the UK

EATING HOT CROSS BUNS

Hot cross buns are small, lightly sweet yeast buns which contain raisins or currants and sometimes chopped candied fruit. Before baking, a cross is slashed in the top of the bun. After baking, a confectioners' sugar icing is used to fill the cross. ...mmmm. Yummy!!

EASTER BONNETS

An Easter Bonnet is a hat specially decorated for church services and parades at Easter. Modern Easter bonnets for children are usually white wide-brimmed hats with a pastel colored satin ribbon around it and tied in a bow. It may also have flowers or other springtime motifs on top, and may match a special dress picked out for the occasion.

EGG HUNT

Easter egg hunt is a game in which embellished eggs, real-hard boiled eggs, chocolate filled candies or ornamental eggs are hidden in or around the house for the kids to find them and enjoy the treats.
